What defines a generation?

I often hear newscasters ask that question when they want to refer to a piece of technology, new movie,or video games. Normally it is something they did grow up with. We get it, they're old. Then we, whatever generation 20-something-old's fall into, ask a similar question....what defines our generation? We grew up being shaped and woven into the information super highway. We were in prime position to learn anything and everything that came along with the fast pace of video game consoles, cell phones, and the internet.

This is not about those things, at least I don't think it is. This is about how one movie can reflect so well on a generation, that when we watch it, we feel we are looking into a mirror. The mirror, just happens to be showing back Scott Pilgrim vs The World (much better looking than my ugly mug). Was it Michael Cera's portrayal of the title character (maybe), Mary Elizabeth-Winstead's mysterious persona (meh), or the multitude of pop culture and video game references our generation love (that may be the one)

This falls in line with how we are killing our own childhood and the childhood of the people 4 to 5 years older and younger than us. We are the biggest nostalgic group out there I have come to realize. I watched my friend's reaction to every reference the movie could have had. Anything that resonated with what he knew, he laughed at. Also, I enjoyed Brandon Roth's evil ex part because he (spoiler) turned out to be a main villain in this past season of Chuck (a show I truly love).

I often claim I am an 80's child, which in some sense is true, I was born in 86. I didn't grow up knowing a ton of stuff in the 80's at the time. I know of it through my parents and reruns of cartoon shows that had ended years earlier, Transformers G1*, GI Joe, The Real Ghostbusters, TMNT, you get the idea. All of the main 80's and early 90's franchises have had a major movie in the last decade, are being rebooted, or rebooting the reboot. As much as I hate the idea of X-Men First Class, Soundwave as the villain for Transformers 3, or the fact GI Joe was awful, I will see these movies. Why, I am a fanboy and nostalgic for what I grew up loving.

Back to Scott Pilgrim: Normally I am not a fan of the guy gets the girl type of movies. Why? It has not happened to me that way becuase normally I am the one losing the girl. The visual presentation, musical score, fight choreography were precise for every single frame shot for that movie.

In Wil Wheaton's PAX East keynote, he spoke of going home. That PAX was one big journey to return home to be among the people we can share a moment most closely with. I say, Scott Pilgrim is one of the few movies we would allow to play on repeat for hours and hours.

*sidenote: I awas listening to the music form the Autobot-Decepticon battle from the Transformers 1986 animated movie in my "Blogging Music" playlist in iTunes.....

PAX East

Is over and done with for close to a month now.

It was awesome.

Saturday I am paint-balling at EMR Paintball in New Milford, PA. Defending a castle with 299 other people against an onslaught of 900 or so invaders. Should be fun.

Working

On working for the right people. The right people, being the government, more importantly, federal law enforcement agencies. If that happens, I will still be keeping up things here with nerd posts.

I am not a fan of my new supervisor. He seems to hate part timers. We all went from having 6-8 hours shift, to 4-5 hour shifts. No longer get meal breaks. So If I close, which I do about two times a week, I can go from not eating from 5:30pm until midnight or even later. If I work at 6pm, I can be there until midnight and not be required to take a break. He also doesn't want any input from us and thinks we are incompetent. Sure, some of my co-workers are incompetent but someone who has a degrees in criminal justice and policitcal science with a concentration in International Relations, I am not an incompetent person. Apparently I am only worth 8.65 an hour though. My friend and his uncle want me to work for them in another short term capacity but we'll see. I am going to push for these federal jobs. Sure it is better money but I am not about the money. This is what I want to do with my life, what I have been dreaming of since I was in 6th grade, right after the super hero and astronaut phases.

Tomorrow after the appointment I have to take my dad to, I will be sitting down to work on applications and my resume all day until work again. I seriously hope I hear back sooner than later on these. I will still be going to the Work in the Industry panel at PAX East on Sunday morning, keeping my options wide open there.

I deleted my Myspace account. I am just waiting for the email to confirm it and I will be done with that. Next up is cleaning my Facebook page out of all the crap from college. I have signed on, maybe, 30 times in the almost year since I graduated college.

After PAX East I will be joining the YMCA with my friend. Gonna get back to work on staying in shape and being healthy. I had my last free range soda today. I will only be drinking one soda a day, either with lunch or dinner. After that is is water or other nutritious drinks.

After that, I am just excited about PAX East.

Hiyo

That is usually the way I make my presence known in a skype chat...or when I text a friend to say "let's hang out tonight".

To start off, I failed at writing ANYTHING, ANYWHERE about PAX, now PAX Prime (not West, that is just dumb.). This blog has been inactive since and mainly due to no traffic. Most of anything I write and want people to read, goes up on my RT journal. I will be going to PAX East in 23 days though and will blog my way through it.

I worked retail this past holiday season and I think I would have preferred to be MOS Qualified and shipped to Afghanistan/Iraq instead of doing that again. It was horrendous. Here is the deal with holiday shopping. The majoirty of the people in this world (and I say majority because there are definitely exceptions to the rule) who shop during the holiday season are rude pricks. The work I want to get into will be tiring and will require me to exert a ton of energy but nothing compares to energy sapping from working in retail during the holiday season.

Coming up though I have a fun month ahead of myself. PAX East kicks off the festivities in late March. Two days after that, I will be heading into Manhattan to meet Gabe and Tycho for their book signing. Yep, I am driving to Boston (as well as flew to Seattle) without meeting or having the intention of meeting the guys behind the Expo. The end of the week, I will be heading to ComixNY to see Iliza Shlesinger perform live. April 5th, Sonata Arctica will be in NYC performing and I don't want to miss that.

April dies down until the 24th when I head to Castle Conquest at EMR Paintball in Pa. Defending the castle with JJ, Bob, and my friend Uccio. I have bought some gear for the game and am very excited for this. I think the numbers are 14,000 attackers against us 1,000 defenders.

Hello world

Sorry for no updates. I have been rather busy.

PAX was one of the greatest times of my life, pictures and a write up to follow.

I just needed to share how awesome tonight was though.

I was able to sit and enjoy actual conversations with people who were not my very close friends for decades. Transformers, America, world affairs, zombie plans, Hell's Kitchen, movies, gaming, the game industry, and a ton more. We sat in Chevy's for what seemed like 3 hours but was only an hour and a half.

After graduating college in May, my brain has been striving for intelligent people to have conversations with, nerdy or not. I have yet to find an outlet for it in all honesty outside my small group of friends. One o my friends had dinner plans with some of his old friends from college and invited me along so I went. I have met both of his friends before, one once and another one, two times.

I am going to cut this short. Just know that since my days in college, I have not had such in depth conversations that could hold my attention and enthrall me. These did happen at PAX but there were so many awesome things about that trip that itfalls udner another category.

I needed a win and tonight was a big win. I am glad my friend invited me along and that I was accepted to come along. I hope this becomes a semi regualr event.

Also, go Yankees and Raymond Padilla, formerly of G4tv's The Feed, is the fucking man! I hope he finds a new job in the industry soon. There is no one more entertaining to read articles from than he. It sucks that during these hard economic conditions the gaming industry is getting hurt with job lose. I don't know why he lost his job nor is it anyone's business. Just know that R_Pad's social commentary on gaming and movie culture will be missed.

That is all.

Introductions and welcomes

Hi there and welcome to my new blog. The name is Mike, or Archer as most know me over these wonderful interwebz. I am 23 years old and a recent colege graduate. Yeah, I work at Best buy but I wil be going off for my real career in January. I am starting a blog for a few key reasons and here they are in an unorganized, flabbish list (Is flabbish a word?).

1) I want a place to share all of my wonderful experiences at PAX in full detail. PAX, for those of you who don't know, is the Peny Arcade Expo, an annual convention that deals with webcomics, video games, and other awesome internet things (Like Red VS Blue, the greatest thing on the internet, seriously, google that shit). I do a weekly ninja rant (More like one every few months...sorry Blue) over on Ninja's Hate Bad Grammar and wanted to broaden my space so I moved over here (My weekly rant will be going back there as well)

2) My format: I have been wanting to expand to a specific 5 day a week pattern for sometime now. I did not want to flood NHBg with this. I will be keeping a basic 5 day format of a different type fo format every day. An example would be a weekly rant every Thursday or Media Mondays. I have not fully figured out what day will be which but will post it Sudnay when I finalize it.

3) Having a blog with a 5 day a week format makes me write more (More ninja rants for NHBG yay!). Which, in turn, makes me read more and expand my vocabulary (Something I need to continue now that I have graduated from college...sigh...)

My early format looks something like this:
Monday = Media Monday, where I will discuss something involving a movie, video game, or the rumors surrounding either or.

Tuesday = Video Views, where I will post the link (Unless someone can tell me how to embed one on here) to a video that interests me and I discuss why it should interest you.

From then on, I have my Ninja Rant, (or Archer's Sniping Point) A life observation, and then I do not know what. I am lost on a fifth topic. Maybe a In the News section but if I do that I will inevitably end up talking poitics and my plan is to not offend people on here.

For now, there you have it.

Special thanks to Eye_Shuh. She does not know it yet, but I found this blog becuase of her and I will be interupting ehr Omeganaught trainging to nquire how to get all the cool features on my blog as well.
